// Why this matters now

AI search has shifted ranking economics

For 20 years, "ranking" meant a position in Google's blue-link list. That changed faster than most teams realized.

01

Single synthesized answer, not 10 blue links

ChatGPT and Perplexity return one answer with 3-5 cited sources. If your site is not one of those, you are invisible in that user's research.

02

Crypto is hit harder than most categories

New users heavily research protocols before committing funds. Increasingly that research starts in an AI chat, not a Google search.

03

AEO and Google rank correlate weakly

Sites can rank #1 in Google and not be cited in ChatGPT. Other sites rank #5 and get cited consistently. Two different signals, different fixes.

The new pattern

A site ranking #1 in Google but never cited in ChatGPT is increasingly common. And increasingly costly.

AEO fixes are different from traditional SEO fixes: schema, factual density, sameAs links, FAQ blocks. The free tool above gives a quick read. The full AEO audit module ships the prioritized fix list.

Common questions about the checker

If you have a question not answered here, the full AEO audit module page goes deeper.

What does the AI citation checker do?

It tests whether ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude cite your domain when answering crypto and Web3 prompts. The tool auto-generates 5 category-relevant prompts based on your site content (e.g. for a DeFi lending protocol, it tests prompts like "best DeFi lending platforms" and "safest stablecoin yield"), then runs each prompt through all three models. The output shows your citation rate per model plus the specific prompts where you appear and where you do not.

Is this really free?

Yes. The basic check (5 prompts across 3 LLMs) is free, no signup required. We rate-limit free checks per IP to manage API costs but for individual use this should not matter. The full AEO audit module covers 30+ prompts across all three LLMs plus competitor comparison, prioritized fixes and PDF report. Free tier covers most use cases for a quick check.

Why does AI citation matter for crypto sites?

AI search has shifted ranking economics. Users increasingly ask ChatGPT and Perplexity questions instead of typing them into Google. If your domain is not cited in AI answers, you lose traffic that traditional Google rank tracking does not capture. For crypto specifically, where new users heavily research protocols before committing funds, AI citation is increasingly the first impression. A site ranking #1 in Google but invisible in ChatGPT is increasingly common.

How do you generate the test prompts?

The tool reads your site to detect the crypto category (DeFi lending, DEX, NFT, wallet etc.) using the same Crypto Keyword Intent Classifier as the full Crawlux audit. Based on category, it generates 5 representative prompts that real users in that category would ask AI models. The full audit module uses 30+ prompts; the free check uses a strategically chosen 5 to balance coverage against API cost.

What does a partial citation mean?

Partial citation means the AI model mentions your protocol or token but does not link to your specific domain. For example, ChatGPT might mention Aave when asked about DeFi lending but cite DefiLlama or CoinGecko as the source rather than aave.com. Partial citations indicate brand recognition but missing direct authority. The fix typically involves shipping FinancialProduct schema and adding sameAs links to authoritative sources so the model resolves the entity to your domain.

How is this different from rank trackers?

Rank trackers measure your position in Google search results for specific keywords. The AI citation checker measures whether you appear in AI-generated answers, which is a different signal. Some sites rank well in Google but never appear in AI answers; others appear consistently in AI answers but rank lower in Google. Both matter. The AI citation rate is the harder signal to influence with traditional SEO alone.

Can I run this on competitor domains?

Yes. The free tool accepts any public domain. You can run it on competitor sites to see their citation rate, then compare. The full Crawlux Competitor Analysis module does this side-by-side automatically against your top 20 competitors with prompt-by-prompt verdicts, but the free tool works for spot-checking individual competitors.

What if my site is too new to be cited?

AI models have a knowledge cutoff that varies by model and query type. For sites less than 6 months old, low or zero citations is expected and not necessarily a problem. The foundation work (schema, authority signals, content depth) determines whether you start getting cited as the models update. The full audit module flags pages most likely to influence future citations once knowledge bases refresh.
