How to rank in ChatGPT for crypto queries: the 12-prompt benchmark

Tactical playbook for getting cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude on crypto queries. The 12-prompt benchmark methodology, 5 ranking factors and common mistakes that block citations.

Why AI citations now drive 9.2% of crypto discovery

In January 2026, Web3 Research Group surveyed 1,847 crypto-native users about how they discover new protocols, wallets and infrastructure. AI search came back at 9.2% of total discovery. A year prior, the same survey put AI search at 1.4%. The slope is steeper than mobile vs desktop search was in 2010.

The shift matters for one reason. AI engines do not show ten blue links. They synthesize one answer and cite 2-3 sources. If your protocol is not in the cited 2-3, you do not get the traffic. The long tail that Google distributes across positions 4-20 does not exist on ChatGPT. Citations are winner-takes-much.

The 12-prompt benchmark methodology

The Crawlux AI Citation Checker runs the same 12 prompts against your domain across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude. Prompts cover the three intent buckets: head queries ("best DeFi lending protocol"), body queries ("compare Aave and Compound for stablecoins") and tail queries ("how does the GHO peg mechanism work").

Each prompt was nominated by at least 3 of 7 panel testers who asked the prompt organically while researching the vertical in the prior 90 days. The threshold prevents prompt-stuffing the score with edge-case queries no real user asks. The full prompt set, the calibration methodology and the panel composition is documented openly. Read the methodology at crawlux.com/blog/crawlux-methodology.

Ranking factor 1: schema accuracy and FinancialProduct adoption

AI engines parse schema before they parse prose. A token page with FinancialProduct schema declaring the correct currency, provider and APR gets cited 3.4x more often than the same page with Product schema. We ran the test on 47 token sites and the lift is consistent across DeFi lending, perpetuals and staking verticals.

The fix is one schema migration. The 14 fields of FinancialProduct are documented in the FinancialProduct vs Product schema migration guide. Most teams ship the migration in under an hour per token page.

Ranking factor 2: audit firm citations

CertiK, Spearbit, Trail of Bits, OpenZeppelin and Halborn function as the credentialing layer for crypto E-E-A-T. AI engines weight pages that cite these sources roughly 2.7x more heavily than pages that do not, in our test set. The citation can be inline ("Audited by Spearbit, see report") or in a footer.

Three caveats. First, the citation must link to the actual audit report, not just mention the firm. Second, the audit report must be public. Third, dated reports beat undated reports for AI parsing.

Ranking factor 3: GitHub and audit transparency

AI engines crawl public repos and audit report PDFs. Sites that link their GitHub repo and their audit report inline on the relevant page surface in citations more often. The mechanism is straightforward: AI engines treat verifiable claims more favorably than unverifiable ones. A linked repo plus a linked audit makes the claim verifiable.

This is also one of the cheapest fixes to ship. Add a "Verify" section to the protocol homepage with two links: the GitHub repo URL and the most recent audit report PDF.

Ranking factor 4: Tier 1 data source backlinks

DefiLlama, CoinGecko, Etherscan, Dune and DappRadar are the canonical data sources for crypto AI parsing. Backlinks from these sources weight heavily. Inbound mentions on these platforms (your protocol appearing in DefiLlama with a description) function similarly.

How to earn placement: submit your protocol with complete metadata to each platform. Then maintain accurate TVL, volume and address data. Outdated entries get deprioritized by AI engines because the data does not reconcile with the on-chain ground truth.

Ranking factor 5: long-form explainer content

AI engines cite pages that answer the question completely in one place. The minimum useful depth for a "how does X work" query is roughly 1,500 words covering the mechanism, the assumptions, the edge cases and the data. Pages under 800 words almost never get cited for tail queries.

This contradicts what generic SEO tools recommend. Generic readability scores penalize pages over 1,200 words. Crawlux scores depth as a positive signal for tail-intent crypto content.

Common mistakes that block citations

Three patterns surface across most low-citation crypto sites. First, robots.txt blocks AI bots by default (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot) because the team copied a generic template. Second, the page answers the question in the FAQ section at the bottom rather than the lead paragraph. Third, the page contains the answer but in a screenshot or PDF that AI engines cannot parse.

The fixes are mechanical. Allow the bots in robots.txt. Move the answer to the first 200 words. Replace screenshots with HTML tables or transcribed text.

How to measure your citation rate

Run the free AI Citation Checker. Submit your domain. The tool returns your citation rate across the 12 prompts within 47 seconds median. Re-run after each fix to measure score change.

For continuous monitoring, the AI Visibility Audit in Crawlux Pro tests citation rate weekly and alerts on score drops.

A 30-day playbook to move citation rate from 0 to >25%

The fastest path to measurable citation improvement runs in four weeks for most crypto sites. Week 1 is mechanical fixes. Allow GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot in robots.txt. Migrate token schema from Product to FinancialProduct. Add audit firm citations with linked reports. Ship the GitHub and audit report verification block on the homepage. These four changes alone move citation rate from 0 to roughly 15-18% in 7-10 days based on our beta cohort.

Week 2 is content depth. Audit each top product page against the 1,500-word minimum for tail queries. Expand thin pages with mechanism explanations, edge case coverage and data tables. Move FAQ answers from the bottom of the page to the lead paragraph for queries with high citation value. Tie answers to verifiable sources (on-chain data, audit reports, official documentation).

Week 3 is Tier 1 source presence. Submit your protocol to DefiLlama, CoinGecko, Etherscan token lists and DappRadar with complete metadata. Maintain accurate TVL and volume data. Outdated entries get deprioritized by AI engines because the data does not reconcile with on-chain ground truth.

Week 4 is measurement and iteration. Run the AI Citation Checker against your domain weekly. Identify which of the 12 prompts you win and which you lose. Adjust content depth and schema on the losing prompts. The compound effect of weekly iteration moves citation rate from 15-18% to 25-35% within 30 days for most beta participants.

Take

AI engines do not cite the site with the best backlink profile. They cite the site with the cleanest schema, the most credible audit signals and the answer in the first 200 words.

// Frequently asked

Frequently asked questions

Which AI engine matters most for crypto?

ChatGPT has the highest crypto user share at roughly 58%, Perplexity second at 27% and Claude third at 15% per the January 2026 Web3 Research Group survey. Optimize for all three. The ranking factors overlap heavily.

How long until citation rate changes show up?

Schema changes show up in 7 to 21 days. Backlink-driven changes take 30 to 60 days. Content depth and robots.txt changes show up in 1 to 7 days.

Does paying for AI ads help my citation rate?

No. Citations are organic. Ads are a separate inventory. ChatGPT and Perplexity have not commingled the two in 2026.

What is the minimum work to start getting AI citations?

Three things. Allow AI bots in robots.txt. Fix token schema to FinancialProduct. Add an audit firm citation with link. Most teams ship all three in under a day.

Can I track AI citations in Google Analytics?

Partially. AI engine referrer traffic shows up in GA4 but the source attribution is inconsistent. Use the AI Citation Checker for citation rate, GA4 for downstream traffic conversion.
