MetaMask manages the user's private keys locally (encrypted, password-protected) and signs requests after explicit approval. Snaps extends the wallet by running JavaScript modules in a sandboxed environment, allowing third parties to add chain support, signing methods and asset types without modifying MetaMask core.

How Phantom works

Phantom started as a Solana-only wallet with a similar architecture: browser extension and mobile app, local encrypted key storage, transaction approval flow. In 2023-2024, Phantom expanded to Ethereum, Polygon, Base and Bitcoin natively. The wallet detects which chain a dApp is on and routes signing through the correct chain logic.
