The Web3 Backlink Toxicity Rubric (published March 24) defined the seven toxicity patterns Crawlux flags. The tool shipping today is the free public implementation of that rubric. Enter a domain. The seven patterns the tool detects, in order of frequency in the crypto corpus. Fake exchange listings (domains claiming to list tokens for trading but with no trading volume, no liquidity, sometimes no actual product) are the most common toxic backlink type in crypto. Paid press release farms (low-authority domains republishing the same press releases verbatim across hundreds of sites) are second. Crypto PBN networks (private blog networks built specifically for crypto link-building) are third. Expired-domain redirects (formerly-reputable domains acquired and redirected to crypto sites) are fourth.

The remaining three. Linkbait shell sites (low-content domains created solely to host outbound links to crypto projects). Comment spam at scale (forum and blog comment networks dropping crypto links across unrelated sites). Sub-page injection (legitimate domains where attacker-controlled sub-pages link out to crypto projects without site-owner knowledge). Each pattern has a specific detection signature documented in the rubric and reproduced in the tool.

Why this matters more for crypto than for e-commerce. Google specifically flags crypto sites for backlink quality at higher rates than the general web. The signal is meaningful: a crypto project with a backlink profile dominated by exchange-listing PBNs sees ranking penalties faster than an e-commerce site with the same profile. Crypto projects also accumulate toxic links faster: any project with token-related queries attracts opportunistic SEO link-building from third parties the project never contracted with.

The tool surfaces a toxicity score from 0 to 100 where 0 is clean and 100 is fully toxic. Median crypto domain in the Crawlux corpus: 34. Top decile (cleanest): below 8. Bottom decile (most toxic): above 67. The distribution skews higher than e-commerce equivalents by a meaningful margin. Each toxic link is flagged with the detected pattern, the source domain authority signals, and a recommended remediation: disavow, contact-and-request-removal, or ignore depending on the volume and pattern.

Common false-positive patterns the tool intentionally does not flag. Aggregator sites (CoinGecko, CoinMarketCap, DefiLlama listings) are not toxic even though they look spammy on volume metrics. Crypto media sites with permissive editorial policies (some of which look low-quality on traditional metrics) are not toxic if they pass the editorial-curation signal. Audit firm reports linking back to audited projects are not toxic by default. The rubric is intentionally conservative on edge cases that look toxic-on-paper but are legitimate ecosystem fixtures.
