Crypto SEO Grader: what 1,247 sites revealed in week one

Full data analysis from the first week of Crypto SEO Grader runs. Median 38 out of 100, top performer 91, bottom decile sub-12. Vertical-specific patterns and what the 91/100 site does differently.

The Grader scoring methodology in brief

The Crypto SEO Grader returns one 0-100 score combining 23 analyzer findings into four weighted components. Technical SEO at 25% (Core Web Vitals, indexability, internal linking, robots policy). Schema accuracy at 25% (FinancialProduct validation across token pages, NewsArticle on content, structured data error checking). AI Visibility at 30% (citation rate across 12 calibrated prompts, AEO vertical fit, AI bot policy). Why a single number works. Crypto teams need a metric that non-SEO stakeholders can track. Founders, CMOs and board members are not running cross-tool aggregation. The single score becomes the shared vocabulary. The fix list underneath is where the actual work sits. The score is what gets reported in the weekly update.

Where a single number fails. Score parity across verticals is not perfect. An NFT marketplace at 50/100 is doing different work than a DeFi lending protocol at 50/100. The score is comparable within a vertical and trackable over time within a single site. Cross-vertical absolute comparisons need care.

The 1,247-site dataset

Between April 14 and April 20, 2026, 1,247 distinct crypto domains ran through the Grader. Geographic distribution roughly tracked the broader Web3 industry footprint: 38% North America, 22% Europe, 18% Asia, 12% Latin America, 10% elsewhere. Site size distribution: 14% had 1M+ monthly visits, 37% between 100K and 1M, 32% between 10K and 100K, 17% below 10K.

Self-selection bias is real. Teams that voluntarily run an SEO audit are typically teams already paying some attention to SEO. The true median across all crypto sites including those never audited is probably lower than the 38/100 we observed. Despite the bias, the dataset is large enough across enough verticals to surface generalizable patterns.

Score distribution: the shape of the market

Distribution by decile across the 1,247 sites. Bottom 10% scored below 12. Bottom 25% scored below 22. Median 38. Top 25% scored above 56. Top 10% scored above 71. Top 1% scored above 84. The single top performer scored 91 out of 100.

The shape is right-skewed with a long thin tail at the top. Most crypto sites cluster in the 25-50 band. The 50-80 band is sparsely populated. Above 80 is rare territory. The market structure rewards crossing the sparsely-populated 50-80 gap because the gap itself acts as competitive moat.

The bottom decile is dominated by pre-launch protocols (12 sites in our cohort), sites with major schema misconfigurations (4 sites with structured data errors blocking AI parsing entirely) and sites that block all AI bots in robots.txt (2 sites with intentional or accidental full-AI deny rules).

Vertical-specific patterns

Layer-1 chains scored highest as a category (median 51 out of 100). Mature documentation pipelines (Docusaurus, Mintlify-style sites), strong developer ecosystem citations from GitHub and consistent audit firm coverage drive the lift. The top-scoring L1 chains had 18 to 30 audit firm citations each and dense GitHub integration footprints.

DeFi lending protocols scored second (median 47). FinancialProduct schema adoption is highest in this vertical because the audit pressure is highest. DEX aggregators and perpetuals scored slightly lower (median 41) primarily due to weaker AI Citation Checker performance on tail prompts.

NFT marketplaces scored lowest (median 24). The primary drivers: missing FinancialProduct-equivalent schema patterns for collections (Product schema is more correct here but rarely well-implemented), weak AI bot policy and limited Tier 1 source presence relative to DeFi. Game-fi adjacent sites scored slightly lower (median 19) with similar patterns plus content depth gaps.

Wallets and infrastructure scored in the middle (median 31 to 34). Pre-launch protocols scored 14 to 22 median, anchoring the bottom of the distribution. The pre-launch baseline being 14 to 22 rather than 0 is itself a finding: even sites with minimal traffic and no AI citation history have meaningful score floors from technical SEO and basic schema.

The 91 out of 100 top performer profile

The top-scoring site in the cohort was a major DeFi lending protocol (name withheld pending permission). Score breakdown: Technical SEO 22/25, Schema accuracy 24/25, AI Visibility 28/30, Backlink health 17/20. Score gaps: a 1-point Core Web Vitals lag on mobile, missing schema on 2 documentation pages and one tail-intent AEO prompt where a competitor was cited first. The backlink profile scored highly overall but had not yet earned every Tier 1 placement.

What separates the 91 from the median 38. First, audit discipline: 47 audit firm citations with linked reports across CertiK, Spearbit, OpenZeppelin, Trail of Bits and Halborn. Second, schema completeness: FinancialProduct schema across all 8 token pages with dynamic APR auto-pull and sameAs declarations to canonical entities. Third, AI bot policy: clean robots.txt with 13 AI bots explicitly allowed and no edge-layer interference. Fourth, content depth: each top product page exceeded 1,800 words covering mechanism, edge cases and data tables.

None of these were accidental. They were product decisions. The team had treated SEO and AEO as engineering work, not marketing work. They shipped each fix as a deliberate change with measurement.

How to read your Grader score

Do not optimize for the score. Optimize for the fix list. The score is a side effect of shipping the right fixes in the right order. Sites that try to game the score by ticking surface-level boxes without addressing the underlying signals see short-term lifts that decay within 30 days.

Track over time, not in absolute terms. Your week-over-week trajectory matters more than your absolute score. A site moving from 22 to 38 in 60 days is doing better work than a site holding at 50 for 6 months. Crawlux Pro subscribers get weekly trend tracking with score-component diffs.

The fix list ranks recommendations by expected score impact. The top 3 fixes typically account for 60-75% of available score lift. Shipping all 5 recommended fixes in week one produced a median 18-point improvement (from 38 to 56) in the post-audit cohort.

Where the score is misleading

The Grader does not measure ultra-niche vertical fit. A protocol serving a 50-person target user base will score lower than a mass-market DeFi product even if it dominates its actual addressable market. The 12 standardized prompts in the AI Citation Checker component miss queries specific to ultra-niche segments.

The Grader also does not weight downstream business outcomes. A site can score 71 with weak conversion. Another site can score 38 with strong conversion. Finally, the Grader does not capture protocol-specific moats that operate outside SEO. A protocol with a 10x technical advantage will succeed despite low Grader scores. The Grader matters for protocols where discovery is a meaningful gating factor, which is most of them but not all.
