8 ways generic SEO tools misread crypto sites

Why generic audits keep showing crypto sites a clean bill of health
You run your token site through Ahrefs and the score is 87. You run it through Semrush and the score is 92. You ship 14 of the recommended fixes. Six months later, the site still ranks for nothing meaningful and your AI citation rate is zero. This is not a coincidence.
Generic SEO tools were built for e-commerce, SaaS and content publishing. The scoring models, the keyword databases and the on-page checklists all assume those website types. Crypto sites violate the assumptions in ways the tools cannot see. The audit comes back green because the tool is checking the wrong things.

A worked example: a $312M TVL DeFi protocol with a clean Ahrefs score
Consider a real pattern we saw repeatedly in beta. A DeFi lending protocol with $312M total value locked, audited by Spearbit and OpenZeppelin, with 47,000 monthly site visits. The Ahrefs audit returned a domain rating of 71 and a site health score of 89. By any generic SEO measure, the site looked healthy.
The Crawlux audit returned 19 high-severity findings. Token schema declared as Product. Audit firm citations not linked to the actual reports. GPTBot blocked in robots.txt by a copied template. Three of the four token pages declared APR values that contradicted on-chain rates by 340 basis points or more. The protocol's AI citation rate across the 12 standardized prompts was 0%. Failure 1: wrong schema type for tokens
Generic tools flag missing schema. They do not flag the wrong schema type. A token page marked up with Product schema passes every check on Sitebulb because Product is a valid schema.org type. The cost: when AI engines parse your page, they classify your token as merchandise. You lose citations to sites that declared FinancialProduct correctly. Failure 2: penalizing crypto-native content tone
Generic readability checks flag crypto content as "hard to read" because the vocabulary contains terms like "liquidity provider", "epoch", "slashing" and "MEV". The tools recommend simplifying. If you simplify, you lose the crypto-native users who already know those terms and you fail the AI citation tests because the prompts use the same vocabulary.

Failure 4: ignoring chain-specific canonical signals
A wrapped USDC on Polygon and native USDC on Ethereum are different contracts with different addresses and different price oracles. They are also the same underlying asset for SEO purposes. Generic tools either treat them as completely different (losing canonical authority) or as duplicates (triggering wrong canonical penalties).

Crypto sites get backlinks with anchor text like "Aave V3", "Curve 3pool" and "GMX perps". Generic toxicity models flag these as keyword-stuffed because the anchors include numeric and product version patterns rarely seen in mainstream SEO. The tools recommend a disavow.
